NSBE – Houston Space Chapter

Chapter Committees and Project Teams

Committees and project teams are the “rubber meets the road” part of the chapter.  Each coordinates its work with a specific Executive Board member and is responsible for organizing our various activities, executing technical projects, and performing other behind the scenes work to make Houston Space one of the best chapters in the National Society of Black Engineers.  We offer committee roles for both technical and non-technical members.  Committee membership is open to all members and is the best way for a new member to become part of the chapter.  We ask that each member join one committee.  Committee membership is also an excellent way for persons who cannot attend chapter meetings to remain connected with the chapter.  Certain committees are also the place to obtain training in career-enhancing skills.

Each committee or project team is organized with roles as follows:

  • Committee/Team Lead: Person overall in charge of leading the group’s work and meeting with the assigned Executive Board member.
  • Core Team Members: Persons choosing this committee/project as their primary NSBE chapter activity.  A minimum of four core team members are needed for a committee/project team to be considered active.  The chapter may be unable to conduct operations related to inactive committees or project teams.
  • Support Team Members: Persons who belong to other committees/projects or hold chapter offices but wish to be involved with the committee/project.  Support team members are not critical to successful operation of committees or projects, but there is no limit to the number of people who may get involved in a committee or project of interest.

In order to avoid over-burdening members, team leads and core team members can only hold that role for one committee/project and Executive Board members may not serve as team leads or core team members.  If they wish to participate in other committees/teams they may do so as support team members.  Each committee or project team will choose its own meeting frequency and in consultation with their respective Executive Board member will determine a timeline and set of deliverables for the year.
